Deye systems connect to a cloud monitoring platform through a small data logger, and the companion app turns your solar installation from a silent box on the wall into something you can actually see: live solar production, battery state of charge, what the house is consuming and what, if anything, is being drawn from the grid. How Deye monitoring works
Three pieces are involved. The inverter continuously measures everything passing through it — solar input, battery charge and discharge, household load and grid flow. A data logger, typically a small dongle fitted to the inverter’s communication port, sends those measurements over your home WiFi (or a mobile-data connection on some setups) to the manufacturer’s cloud platform. The app on your phone reads from that platform, which is why you can check your system from the office, the beach or another country entirely.
Two practical consequences follow. First, if your internet goes down, the system keeps working perfectly — you only lose the remote view until the connection returns, and the logger typically catches up the history afterwards. Second, because the data lives in the cloud, your installer can (with your permission) see the same numbers, which makes remote diagnosis and settings support dramatically easier.
Getting set up for the first time
Deye systems in South Africa are monitored through the cloud app associated with the data logger fitted to your inverter — your installer will confirm which app applies to your specific hardware and should set it up as part of commissioning. The broad flow is consistent across setups:
- Create your owner account in the relevant app with your email address, and have your inverter or logger serial number to hand — the serial is how the platform links the physical machine to your account.
- Add your installation (the platforms usually call it a “plant” or “station”), which registers your system against your account.
- Connect the logger to your home WiFi. The app walks you through pointing the logger at your network and entering the WiFi password. A steady signal at the inverter’s location matters more than a fast one.
- Confirm data is flowing — within a few minutes you should see live figures updating.
One strong recommendation: make sure the installation is registered to your own account, with your installer added as an authorised viewer — not the other way round. Owners who discover years later that their monitoring lives on a defunct installer’s account lose their history and control. Reading the app: the four numbers that matter daily
- Solar production (kW now, kWh today): the live figure bounces with cloud cover; the daily total is the one to watch. Over weeks you will learn your system’s rhythm — the summer curve, the winter curve, and what a healthy day totals.

- Household consumption: the revelation for most owners. Watch what happens when the geyser, oven or pool pump kicks in and you will understand your electricity bill better than a decade of municipal statements ever taught you.

Using the app to save more money
Monitoring is not just reassurance — it is an optimisation tool. A few habits pay for the five minutes they take:
- Shift heavy loads into the solar window. The consumption chart shows exactly when your panels are producing surplus. Running the dishwasher, washing machine or pool pump in that window uses sunshine that might otherwise be curtailed, instead of evening battery capacity.
- Check the morning state of charge in winter. If the battery is hitting its reserve floor before sunrise in June, your evening programme may need a seasonal adjustment — something your installer can often do remotely.
- Investigate anomalies early. A production day wildly below its neighbours with no weather excuse, or a phantom overnight load that was never there before, is worth a query while it is small.
- Enable alerts. The platforms can notify you of faults and offline events, so problems announce themselves rather than hiding until the bill arrives.
Troubleshooting the common app issues
- App shows the system offline: the inverter is almost certainly fine — this is the logger losing its internet connection. Check whether your WiFi is up, whether the router was recently changed or renamed, and whether the password changed. Re-running the logger’s WiFi configuration in the app restores most cases.
- Data updates but looks frozen or delayed: cloud platforms update at intervals of several minutes, not second-by-second. A short delay is normal; hours of silence is a connection issue.
- Readings look wrong: before doubting the hardware, check you are reading the right tile — daily versus total figures, and load versus grid flows, are the usual confusions. If a figure is genuinely nonsensical, note a screenshot and contact your installer.
- Lost account access: use the app’s recovery flow with your registered email. This is also your reminder to keep the account in your own name with a password you control.
What the app cannot do
The owner app is a window, not a control panel. Battery parameters, work modes, export settings and grid-compliance configuration live behind installer-level access — deliberately, because incorrect values there can damage batteries or breach municipal requirements. If the data shows something that needs changing, the app’s job is to give you the evidence; your installer’s job is to make the change. A properly commissioned system is handed over with monitoring running on the owner’s own account as standard practice, whichever installer does the work. A common question
Can more than one person use the app?
Yes — households commonly share access, and you can grant your installer viewer access for remote support while keeping ownership of the account yourself. Keep the credentials with the homeowner, treat the account like any other utility login, and access for family members or a new installer is straightforward to manage later.
